But as someone who’s spent the last decade supplying anode plates and anode sheets to industries I never expected—from shipyards to petrochemical plants to, yes, construction—this is exactly where my team’s work has landed. A few years back, I got a call from a project manager at a mid-sized construction firm in Detroit, halfway through pouring the foundation for a new mixed-use downtown tower. “We’re hitting so much corrosion,” he said, his voice tight over the phone. “The steel rebar we put in is rusting before we even cover it, and we’re losing three weeks to sandblasting and patching. Is there anything your anode stuff can do here?” That question changed how I think about what anode plates and sheets can be, beyond their usual roles in electrolysis, battery manufacturing, and water treatment. Today, I want to pull back the curtain on a use case most construction teams don’t know about—and explain why anode plates and anode sheets might just be the unsung solution to one of the building industry’s oldest, most costly problems: corrosion. Anode Plates and Anode Sheets

Let’s start with the basics, because I’ve learned a lot over the years about how to explain this to people who don’t work with anode materials every day. If you’re in construction, you know corrosion is the slow, expensive breakdown of metal caused by electrochemical reactions. When steel rebar is buried in concrete, the wet, alkaline environment of concrete should actually protect it—until something throws that balance off. Add in road salt for bridges and highways, deicing chemicals in winter, or even just moisture that seeps through cracks as a building ages, and you create what’s called a corrosion cell: the rebar acts as the cathode, anodes form elsewhere, and electrons flow, eating away at the steel over time. By the time you see a brown rust stain on a parking garage wall, the rebar inside has already lost 10 or 15 percent of its cross-sectional strength, and the concrete is starting to spall (that flaky, cracked concrete you see on old overpasses). This isn’t a small problem. According to the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), the global cost of corrosion is estimated at $2.5 trillion annually—and the construction sector accounts for 40 percent of that total. For a typical highway bridge, corrosion repairs can run $500,000 per lane mile, and replacing corroded rebar halfway through a construction project can add 20 to 30 percent to the total build cost. That’s where anode technology comes in, specifically impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP), the method my team’s anode plates and sheets are designed for.

Here’s how ICCP works, simplified for construction: instead of letting corrosion happen naturally, you reverse the electrochemical reaction. You attach a DC power source to a set of inert anodes (that’s our plates and sheets) and connect those anodes to the steel rebar in your concrete structure. The anodes don’t corrode—they’re made of materials like titanium coated with platinum or mixed metal oxides, which are stable even in harsh, wet concrete environments. The power source sends a steady, low-voltage current from the anodes to the rebar, turning the rebar into the cathode of the cell, so it stops giving up electrons and stops rusting. For years, ICCP was only used on large, above-ground steel structures: offshore oil rigs, pipelines, and big coastal bridges. But over the last 15 years, construction teams have started adapting it for embedded concrete rebar—and that’s where our products come in. Anode plates, usually between 12 and 24 inches across and a quarter-inch thick, are sized to fit between sections of rebar grid before concrete is poured. Anode sheets, thinner and more flexible (think of a heavy-duty metal foil), can be cut to fit around curved rebar for bridge arches or the rounded foundation of a high-rise. I’ve seen teams use anode plates in the foundation of a 40-story apartment building in Chicago, embedding them at 2-foot intervals along the rebar grid, and anode sheets wrapped around the pilings of a coastal hotel in Florida to fend off saltwater corrosion from below the water line.

But wait—what about the alternatives? Construction teams have been using epoxy-coated rebar for decades, right? Or stainless steel rebar, or even concrete admixtures with corrosion inhibitors. I get asked this all the time, and it’s important to be honest: none of these are one-size-fits-all solutions, and anode-based ICCP has real advantages for specific use cases. Epoxy rebar works well for some projects, but it scratches during installation, and even a tiny scratch is enough to start a corrosion cell under the epoxy, making it worse than regular rebar in the long run. Stainless steel rebar is way more expensive—up to 5 times the cost of standard carbon steel rebar—and it’s hard to cut and bend on-site, leading to delays. Corrosion inhibitors mixed into concrete leach out over time, especially if water seeps through, so they only provide 10 to 15 years of protection, max. ICCP with our anode plates and sheets? Once it’s installed, the power source is small (usually about the size of a lawnmower engine for a large foundation), and the anodes can last 20 to 30 years with minimal maintenance. For structures that are meant to last 75 years or more—like bridges, hospitals, or schools—that’s a game-changer. The upfront cost of ICCP is about 10 to 15 percent more than epoxy rebar, but over the life of the structure, it’s 30 to 40 percent cheaper, because you avoid mid-lifespan repairs. I’ve seen that play out firsthand on a highway expansion project in Ohio a few years back. The original bid used epoxy rebar; by year 10, they were already planning $2 million in repairs for the 10-mile stretch. The second phase, which used our anode plates for ICCP, had a total corrosion-related cost of less than $200,000 in its first 8 years—far below projections.

Of course, it’s not all upside. Anode plates and sheets for construction aren’t a fit for every project. If you’re building a small 1,500-square-foot home in a dry, non-coastal area, the cost of ICCP would outweigh the benefits—standard rebar with a breathable concrete mix is more than enough. The installation also requires a little extra planning: you can’t just drop anodes into the concrete haphazardly. You have to work with a corrosion engineer to map out the rebar grid, calculate how many anodes you need, and make sure the wiring runs are routed properly to avoid interference with other structural components. That’s why my team doesn’t just sell plates and sheets—we work with construction firms to help them design the ICCP system, too, because we know that even the best product won’t work if it’s installed wrong. Last year, a small contracting company in Texas called us because they’d bought cheap, generic anodes from a third-party supplier and had to rip them out of a school foundation 6 months later; the anodes were corroding within the concrete, sending metal particles into the mix that actually sped up rebar rusting. We worked with them to replace the anodes with our mixed-metal oxide sheets, and with a corrected installation plan, the system has held up for over a year now. That’s the kind of problem-solving that comes with being a supplier who’s been in this space for years, not just someone selling off a catalog.

Another common question I get: are anode plates and sheets safe for construction crews, or for the people who will use the building later? I get it—any time you introduce metal and a power source into a structure, people worry. The anodes we supply are inert, meaning they don’t leach any toxic materials into the concrete or the surrounding soil. The mixed metal oxide coating is non-toxic, and the low voltage from the power source (usually 1 to 5 volts, about the same as a standard AA battery) is so low that there’s no risk of electric shock for construction workers, or for anyone using the building. We’ve tested the anodes for compliance with ASTM standards for concrete embedment, and they meet all OSHA safety requirements for on-site use. For hospitals, schools, and residential buildings, that’s a critical point—no one wants to worry about harmful chemicals from their foundation seeping into their home or a patient wing.

Let’s also talk about recent innovations that are making anode materials even more useful for construction. Just a few years ago, anode sheets were rigid and hard to cut on-site, so crews had to pre-cut them in our warehouse to exact dimensions. Now, we supply flexible, roll-form anode sheets that can be cut with regular tin snips, so contractors can adjust them on the fly to fit around odd-shaped columns or foundation corners. We also make lightweight anode plates that are half the weight of traditional titanium plates, which cuts down on labor time when crews are lifting heavy materials around a busy site. These small changes might seem trivial, but they’ve cut installation time for our systems by 25 percent, which is a huge win for construction projects working on tight deadlines. I also worked on a project for a coastal wind farm in the Carolinas a couple of years ago—their turbine pilings were sitting in saltwater, which is one of the most corrosive environments on Earth. We supplied custom-sized anode plates that were mounted to the pilings above the water line, using a special coating that resists marine growth, and that system has kept the pilings rust-free for over 4 years now, far beyond the original 2-year warranty they had with a different corrosion solution.

As someone who’s been in the anode supply business for nearly 12 years, I’ve seen a lot of trends come and go in the construction industry. Corrosion isn’t going away—if anything, with more construction happening in coastal areas, more use of deicing chemicals on highways, and longer lifespans expected for new structures, corrosion will only become a bigger problem. I’ve had construction managers tell me that anode technology is “too new” or that they’ve never heard of it before, but that’s exactly why I started writing about this—because there’s a better way to build structures that last, that don’t require expensive repairs every 10 years. The anode plates and sheets my team makes aren’t flashy materials—you’ll never see them in a magazine spread for a new skyscraper—but they’re the reason that building will stand strong for 75 years, that the bridge won’t close for repairs in 20, that a coastal home won’t have to deal with spalling concrete after a decade of hurricanes.

If you’re a construction project manager, engineer, or contractor reading this, and you’re dealing with corrosion on your next project, or you’re just looking for a long-term solution to protect a structure that’s meant to last, I’d encourage you to reach out. We don’t just sell anode plates and sheets—we work with you to assess your project, design a custom ICCP system that fits your timeline and budget, and support you through installation and beyond. I’ve spent my career making a product that solves real, expensive problems, and there’s no better feeling than getting a call a decade later from a construction manager saying, “That anode system you sold us? We haven’t had a single corrosion issue, and we saved $3 million in repairs we would’ve spent otherwise.” If you’re ready to stop dealing with corrosion delays and cost overruns, we’re here to help.

PCB Water Anode References

National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE).
